Volunteers are a vital part of our orphanage, it is important for the children to help them with their English and for them to learn about the world “outside” Ghana. It also boosts their self esteem to know that volunteers have come from so far away to work with them! Volunteers are expected to assist the school teachers during school hours, outside of those hours their time is their own, they are welcome to spend it with the children if they wish. The purpose built school rooms are a fantastic improvement. We have 3 qualified Ghanaian teachers, volunteers assist these staff.

School hours are 8.30 – 3pm Mon to Fri, lunch is served to the children and staff around noon.

As our children are behind educationally, they need extra help catching up, which requires a lot of one-on-one assistance.

Teacher’s assistants are critical to this process. We school the 40+ live in orphans and another 36 children from the local village, the children are aged 3-14 years.

Play is an important aspect of a child’s life. Many life skills can be taught to children through play. There are numerous opportunities to interact with the children and teach them valuable life skills through play.

Accommodations and Charges
Hohoe Christian Orphans’ Home is located on the outskirts of a beautiful rural village in the Volta Region of Ghana. A maximum of 6 volunteers can be accommodated at any one time. Volunteers are housed in shared accommodation, the room has ceiling fans and power outlets for mobile phone charging, laptops etc, each volunteer has a lockable cupboard. There are showers and western style flush toilets. All amenities are new. A fee of $US150/week is payable which covers accommodation, food and also helps fund the day to day running costs of the orphanage.

Free Time
Travel in Ghana is generally inexpensive and safe, and in a country as culturally diverse as Ghana there are many opportunities to explore your surroundings and engage with the history of the country. With options from tropical rainforest, lush beaches, and bustling towns all within easy reach, there is much to choose from. Please see the Tourism page for sites to explore in the Hohoe District.

Travel from the Airport to Hohoe: We are happy to arrange transportation to pick you up from the airport and drive you the 3 1/2 hour journey to the orphanage. The fee for this service is 120GH (approx $US120)
