History and Mission

Hohoe Christian Orphans’ Home (HCOH) was founded in 2003 by Nicholas Abibu Koku Victus. Nicholas, and other concerned citizens, decided to make an effort to help the needy, under-privileged, deprived, and destitute children in the Volta Region, and in the Hohoe District in particular.

HCOH is a non-profit, volunteer-run, Non Governmental Organization (NGO). The mission of the Hohoe Christian Orphans’ Home is to mobilize these unfortunate children of circumstances and provide them with care, love, education, and employable skills that will make them capable of taking charge of their own lives in the future, and to not become a burden on society.

HCOH aims to provide facilities to meet the physical, social, educational, and moral needs of needy and destitute children and teenage mothers in Hohoe District. In surveying the region, with a population of over 164,000, we have identified over 6,000 under-privileged orphans and destitute children in Hohoe District. Most of these children – many who live on the streets, are child laborers, or teenage mothers – spend their days begging for money or selling water or other petty items. Most of these unfortunate children are left at the mercy of the street where they are exposed to health hazards and physical and moral dangers.

We have identified and registered over 168 poor and needy children who are to be catered for, but due to financial constraints we have the means to care for only 80 children at this time.

Future Plans

As part of our aim and vision we have drawn a 5-year comprehensive development plan to assist street children, orphans, and teenage mother in the Hohoe District. This plan includes the construction of a new home for all the orphans that will include dormitory style living quarters, a full kitchen, and dining area for the children.

The plan also includes a 6-room schoolhouse so that there will be smaller age-appropriate classes taught by professional teachers. Please see the architectural drawings of the main house and schoolhouse, as well as photos of the building construction currently underway under “view photos.”

HCOH will also have a playground, nursery unit, office, and library, and the entire compound will be surrounded by a fence and security booth completing the safe environment for the children. Good hygiene and potable drinking water is an important part of the plan. Showers and toilets will be on the premises in both the main house and schoolhouse. Children will be given medical care, food, clothing, education, and vocational skills training.

We will, under the 5-year comprehensive development plan, work vigorously toward assisting identified teenage mothers, help get them off the streets, and provide them with the necessary education and skills to earn a living. This will help steer teenage mothers away from prostitution as a business, which exposes them to many hazards including the deadly disease HIV-AIDS.

HCOH will be successful in achieving the desired results because of the cooperation and support of the Hohoe District Assembly, the Social Welfare Department, Ghana Health Services, and the zeal of the members of the community to see this project succeed and benefit the District.

Achieved to date
In the past 12 months we have achieved a considerable amount. In Sept 07 with a donation of $3,000 the new orphanage building project was started. June 08 saw us complete Stage 1 and move 40 children into the orphanage, where they are now reveling in their new facilities. A total of $90,000 was raised to complete Stage 1 and the 6 room school house is being utilized at this time as both accommodation and school. We are now working hard on raising funds to complete Stages 2 & 3, purpose built dormitories, ablutions block, common room and volunteers quarters and clinic. We have also employed 2 qualified Ghanaian teachers and are looking to employ a 3rd when funds permit. Although there is a long way to go we now have “concrete evidence” that with generous donations by individuals of either their time or cash the 5 year plan is not just a dream. The Hohoe Christian Orphans’ Home can and has already made a positive impact on these disadvantaged children’s lives.
